, governor, first of all, governor romney made is clear in the debate and he was actually able to speak directly to the american people that he is not going to lower the burdening on up youer income individuals. we know that upper income individuals rely more heavily on deductions and he will give the relief on the middle class and it will be deficit neutral. one of the best lines of the debate was i have five sons and you can tell the story i'm used to hearing the story five times and having me believing it to be true but we know it is not true what they are saying about his tax plan. let's talk about the president's vision. >> let's talk about where his deductions are. >> chris: let's finish about that and then we will talk about the president's vision, senator. part of the problem is that i have asked romney and ryan repeatedly. i asked ryan on this show last sunday not -- i don't agree with you it is a $5 trillion tax cut but i said where do you make up the $5 trillion for are lowering tax rates in terms of the deductions and loopholes, how do you make it up? they reduce to tell us.

will be given the first question. mitt romney will have the final word tonight. the debate will be broken up into six 15-minute segments for a 90-minute debate. it will include three on the economy, one on health care, one on governing and one on the state of government. the role of government, i should say. now, both candidates will be standing at podiums. no strict time limits. each candidate will have two minutes to answer that question and then the rest of the segment will be an open discussion about the topic at hand. so that is how the debate is going to do. aides with the obama campaign say his goal is to deliver his message in a crisp and clear manner. to not seem too long winded as sometimes he has in the past. so that's really his goal and also to make the case about why he thinks he can do a better job in these next four year of turning the economy around and to really give people specifics. as i said, the first lady will be there tonight. it is their 20th anniversary. no time to really celebrate tonight. they say they will do that this weekend. >> quite a way to celebrate. thanks

romney supporter. the brown warren debate. if you want to have some fun this morning if you're feeling like you're unpopular in the workplace, do on the twitter and just search the words david and gregory and see what pops up. because after last night's debate, i have never seen more scorn heat on a debate moderator in my life. i didn't see the entire debate. i saw most of it and i think david gregory was really hard on both candidates. and if you look on the twitter today, you'll see liberals feel he was completely biased and conservatives feel the same way. maybe david was doing something right. he was not doing something right over the weekend on "meet the press" when he actually misquoted the president. to a rather alarming extent and falsely claimed that barack obama had claimed that al-qaeda had been defeated. of course, if you heard the actual speech of barack obama he talked about how al-qaeda was on the run. he said barack obama had said that the goal that i set to defeat al-qaeda and deny it a chance to

in for the president in romney's debate preps, the silver haired guy in the pink shirt is ohio senator rob portman. and, in fact, portman has really become the go-to guy for republican candidates who need a sparg partner. he's really good at this. but here's the thing, he's never really talked publicly about his role, the preparation and how his debate preps have gone. until now. because i have one of the best colleagues in the business, dana bash, she got the inside story. it is fascinating. one of the things i can't believe you're able to unearth is this anecdote about the 2008 campaign preps between mccain and obama. did rob portman -- is this true, did he get cyndi mccain to cry? >> he did. i don't think that was his intention, i know it wasn't, but he did. and the reason is because they were in debate prep, he was playing barack obama, and he was apparently so believable in his role as barack obama and more importantly so tough, hard hitting against his sparring partner, john mccain, that cindy mccain got very upset and ran crying out of the room. i talked to rob portman about that, he told me tha

and just three points in nevada where the debates are taking place tonight. with both romney and the president wrapping up final debate practice yesterday, joe biden was in north carolina and paul ryan in iowa. they traded jabs over the middle class. >> vice president biden just today said that the middle class over the last four years has been buried. we agree. >> mitt romney is under pressure to give more details into both his tax reform proposal and plans for the middle class. yesterday, he finally offered up an idea saying in order to pay for his reform each taxpayer would have a limit on how much they could deduct. the number he threw out was $17,000 and compared that to a bucket saying you can take whatever deductions you want but once you hit $17,000 that's it. we heard his plan for undocumented immigrants. he would not revoke the temporary limitations adopted by the president but if elected there would be no more protections. we're coming back after the break. >> i wouldn't be where i am today if it wasn't for capella university. i go to work every day and know that i

as romney explained very clearly in the debate the other night, no, i am not cutting taxes on the richest. what i want to do is lower rates overall by 20%. and eliminate loopholes, deductions, exemptions, that sort of thing. which i think all serious people who look at the tax code think needs to be done. it's the richest of all by the way who take the most advantage of tax deductions. that is a fairer way of looking at t maybe if you have a lot of deductions you don't want to get rid of them. but you always feel like with reductions, somebody else is getting a better deal than you are. mitt romney hasn't specified which deductions. i can think of a few we should get rid of like deductions for state and local taxes. why should the rest of the country be supporting the high tax rates of california and new york? but anyway, that's my position, not mitt romney's and he also explained in the debate, this is my general proposal. we'll argue about it. we'll talk about it. i'll take it to the democrats and we'll work it out. but even the tax policy center that claims this would be a $5 trillion

out most recently. senator rob portman has been playing the president as mitt romney prepares for the debate tonight. and he told cnn in an exclusive interview, it is his job to get under the candidate's skin and prepare him for the toughest attacks. portman has been the g.o.p. go-to guy for years. since 2000 he's played al gore, jon lieberman, john kerry and john edwards and now president obama. pretty malleable guy. he's reportedly been helping romney work on not getting overly defensive which is his weak point. he then tends to say things he wishes he hadn't. everyone has an opinion as to what to look for tonight. prettyies could -- politico has five things. first, can romney get aggressive without attacking. last thing he wants to do is come across snide or smug. how hard can the president push without getting too negative. he's not a big romney fan. we'll see if he can mask that true contempt. how will they handle the 47% libya, has the president had enough time to debate prep and five, will clinton co

ahead and sniping at romney in ways that could be repeated and reiterated he had problems and not really closed the sale. now we go into the debate in a three point -- structurally president obama, this part of romney's analysis is correct that he is a weak incumbent. he is not quite george bush's you look at the numbers in 2004 and he is vulnerable. i wonder if they could have done more. romney should give a major speech or do this or let out his agenda. i suspect the democrats are more solid in their support of president obama but less critical at least in public. it thought were a democrat that wish to welcome the outside i would have -- maybe he should be doing a little more. he is at some risk of looking like an incumbent staggering to victory by discrediting his opponent with 50.1% of the electorate and it might work. one will discredit the other. may be less for more running room than i would have expected. if you told me what happened i would have thought the numbers would be worse for romney. >> if you give us your name and organization? >> the financial times. i am curious what

package and said he would go to the debate unless there was a bailout package. so in the middle of all this, we didn't know if john mccain would show up on the night. so that's september. and that romney has now had a tough month. it is september. people ask mala time, what do you think? what is going to happen? i would say it's pretty early. if you think about it, the 18 day sound like a lifetime to me. so he's got two lifetimes. it was like 40 days. a lot can happen on the campaign trail between now and the end.
